MY UJ JOURNEY

Introduction

The University of Johannesburg celebrates 20 years of excellence, which is a significant milestone for the institution. UJ turning 20 represents a two-decade journey of growth, innovation, and transformation in tertiary education. UJ has completely redefined what it means to be a top African institution by reaching significant milestones that have positioned it at the forefront of academia, research, and community engagement. Through programs such as the UJ Community Engagement, the university has partnered with local organisations to provide services and support to disadvantaged communities.

UJ is not just another university for me, it is an institution that gave me a chance to pursue my chosen course. I am honoured to have been granted an opportunity to further my studies at this prestigious institution. As a student, being part of an institution that is one of the best in Africa is a source of pride and motivation. UJ has inspired me to make a meaningful impact while I still have the chance to. Being a part of an organisation that values impact, creativity, inclusion, and integrity is a meaningful and life-changing educational experience that prepares students for success in both their personal and professional lives.

My personal and academic growth at UJ

UJ contributed a lot to shaping the person I am today. It all started with an acceptance letter, now this institution is a huge part of my life. Reflecting on my first year, I used to be very shy. I remember my first presentation here at UJ: I couldn’t even say a sentence without stammering to save my life. UJ helped me overcome my fear of public speaking. UJ is a place where I discovered my strengths, I am currently building connections with other people in my field, and it’s a place where I prepare for my future career as a Public Relations Practitioner (PRP).

To be honest, my first days here at UJ were not good. I didn’t know anyone on campus, and I kept getting lost every time I had to go to class. At the end, I was able to get to know my classmates and make friends through group work. Overall, UJ’s inclusivity made me feel welcomed and fostered confidence, self-awareness, and a sense of belonging. During my first year, I was exposed to innovative approaches and ideas that can stimulate critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, and I will forever be grateful for those skills, as I will need them in the future as a PRP.

UJ’s contribution to the community and social development

The University of Johannesburg plays an important role in community engagement and social development. Community engagement has 3 segments, which are service learning, community-based research, and organised outreach. Community engagement is an example that humanity still exists. As a volunteer, I learned a lot from community engagement. I learned to always help those in need and be kind. I like volunteering in the food garden, where we help water the vegetables, and I also like volunteering for the Boys & Girls Club, where we tutor and help children with their homework. Nothing warms up my heart like the smiles of children when we are helping them with their homework.

Hopes for UJ’s future

I wish UJ continued expansion, continued excellence, and a century or more. I hope that UJ continues to be South Africa's leading generator of research outputs. I wish UJ continues to prioritize innovation, diversity, and community engagement.  It is my aim that UJ will continue to produce graduates with a pass percentage of at least 90% plus. To accommodate more students, I hope UJ increases its courses, capacity, and opens other campuses. In order to raise its profile and reputation internationally, I hope UJ will fortify its international alliances.

Conclusion

An important turning point in the university's history is marked by UJ@20. Being a student at UJ, I am honoured to be a part of an organisation that has greatly contributed to both my academic and personal development. The institution has established an atmosphere that encourages social responsibility, creativity, and academic curiosity because of its dedication to diversity, innovation, and community engagement. I do not doubt that UJ will remain a catalyst for constructive change in South Africa as it looks to the future.
